Frequently asked questions.

The questions we hear most from clients — about preparing returns, responding to the IRS, running a business, and what it's like to work with us.

Individuals

General & Individual Tax

What documents do I need to bring for my tax preparation appointment?+

To ensure your return is accurate and filed efficiently, please provide: Identification — government-issued ID and Social Security cards (or ITINs) for everyone listed on the return. Income documents — W-2s, 1099s (NEC, MISC, INT, DIV, B), and any documentation for cash income. Adjustments & deductions — student loan interest statements (1098-E), mortgage interest statements (1098), charitable donation receipts, and medical expenses. Prior year return — a copy of your most recent federal and state tax returns.

I received an IRS notice (like a CP2000 or CP14). What should I do?+

First, do not panic. A CP2000 means there is a mismatch between what was reported on your return and what a third party (like an employer) reported to the IRS. A CP14 is a standard balance-due notice. Action step: do not ignore it, and do not pay it immediately without verifying. Send us a copy of the notice right away, and we'll review it against your records to determine if the IRS is correct or if we need to file a dispute.

How long does it take to get my tax refund?+

The IRS typically issues refunds within 21 days of receiving an electronically filed return. If you opt for direct deposit, it's usually faster. Paper-filed returns can take anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks (or longer) to process.

Self-Employed

Self-Employed & Gig Workers

What expenses can I deduct as a self-employed individual or gig worker?+

You can deduct ordinary and necessary expenses required to run your business. Common deductions include: vehicle expenses — either the standard mileage rate or actual expenses (gas, oil changes, insurance) for business-related driving; home office — a portion of your rent/mortgage, utilities, and internet if you have a dedicated space used exclusively for business; tools & supplies — software subscriptions, phone lines used for business, equipment, and industry-specific tools.

How do quarterly estimated tax payments work?+

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in taxes when you file your return, the IRS requires you to make quarterly estimated payments. These are due on April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15. We can calculate these exact vouchers for you to help you avoid underpayment penalties.

Business Owners

Business Formation & Growth

Should I form an LLC, an S-Corp, or a Holding Company?+

The right structure depends entirely on your business goals, liability risks, and income level. LLC — great for protecting personal assets with minimal administrative complexity. S-Corp — often beneficial once your business reaches a certain income threshold, allowing you to optimize self-employment taxes. Holding Company — ideal if you own multiple business entities or valuable assets and want to isolate risks and centralize management. We look at your specific scenario to guide you through the pros and cons of each structure.

What is an EIN, and do I need one?+

An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is essentially a Social Security Number for your business. You need one if you plan to hire employees, open a business bank account, form a partnership or corporation, or if you want to avoid using your personal SSN on W-9 forms. We handle the paperwork to secure your EIN seamlessly during the incorporation process.
